Habitat restoration on the Birrarung – Yarra River floodplain (DEECA Faunal Emblems) 2024-26

The Faunal Emblems Program, funded by the Victorian Government, aims to enhance the long‑term viability of the Leadbeater’s Possum and the Helmeted Honeyeater, two of Victoria’s State Faunal Emblems.

This project will establish up to 10 ha of high‑quality habitat on priority floodplain sites on private land, with the potential for these areas to serve as translocation sites within 10–15 years. It will create habitat links to the Coranderrk Nature Conservation Reserve, complementing landscape‑scale conservation efforts and aligning with recovery actions for both species.

Key activities include the development of habitat plans, landholder agreements to maintain restored vegetation, targeted revegetation to meet species‑specific habitat needs, herbivore‑exclusion fencing, and deer control.

Key achievements for this project in 2025 include:

  • Engaged with 3 landholders and identified sites for creation of dense habitat stepping stones.
  • Detailed habitat restoration plans developed for 2 locations.
  • Established 7200 plants in a 450m biolink connecting properties, protected by 1.1 km fencing.
  • Partnered with Yarra Ranges Ribbons of Green program and community volunteers to establish extensive revegetation.
  • Further revegetation locations identified on 3 adjoining properties with 40,000 plants ordered for 2026 planting.
